SPENCER CUP WINNERS!!!
Bective won their first ever Spencer Cup after our 1XV defeated Suttonians last Friday night. In a tightly contested match, Bective centre Bobby Holland crashed over the Sutton line late in the game for the winning score. Tough on our opponents celebrating their centenary year and hosting the final at their home ground. Full credit to all the coaches and players on an outstanding performance and with their third trophy of the season in the cabinet, it sets the squad up nicely for the AIL Semi-Final on Saturday week.
Rita Kealy with Grandsons David and Benji Kealy
Special mention to the Kealy cousins, David and Benji, winning their medals on the night and following in the footsteps of grandfather and grand uncle, Ben Kealy Snr and brother Jack who were members of the Railway Union RFC Spencer Cup winning side back in 1964. Included in the team back then also was our own Jerry Culleton who captained the side.
Jerry & Barbara Culleton
All our teams at the club are currently in great form and in the hunt for silverware with our 2 XV battling to a great 1st round Moran Cup away win against Coolmine RFC last Saturday. Our 3 XV and 4 XV are both qualified for their respective league finals, with the 3XV up first this Saturday and then our U20s are in the Semi-Final of the Gale Cup on Sunday 6 April.
Always remember your support is key to the team’s success.
Spencer Cup Final: Suttonians 15 - Bective 17
Metro League Division 8 Final
St Mary’s College vs Bective Rangers
SAT 29 MAR | TEMPLEVILLE RD |KO: 6.00PM
Bective 3XV take on St Mary's this Saturday evening at 6pm in Templeville Road. A repeat of the O'Connor Cup final last April, this promises to be a riveting game.
All support for this final is welcome - the match will be on the front pitch in Templeville Road. St Mary’s have a home AIL fixture on the same day, so they'll have a sizable crowd at the Metro 8 final after it. We would really appreciate as much support as possible on the sidelines to cheer the lads on.

Saturday
U12 - Willow Blitz - The U12's took 2 teams to the Willow Blitz on Saturday. In what was a jam packed schedule both teams represented the Bective badge superbly scoring some great tries on the way to some great victories against some tough opposition. Congratulations to Paul and his team of coaches in their management of such a large group. The future is bright for their transition to 15 aside rugby next season.
Sunday
U8 - St. Mary's - The U8's were away in St. Mary's on Sunday morning. They played some very competitive rugby and scored some super tries. Neil Pickard and Jamie Martin-Smith have done a super job coaching this group.
U10 - Lansdowne - The U10's played away to Lansdowne on Sunday. It was a tough match with both sides playing some great rugby and defending with some ferocious tackling. Congrats to Tommy Sheehy and his coaching team for all the hard work with this group.
U11 - Westmanstown - The U11's played away in Westmanstown on Sunday. As usual they were more than up to the task playing some super rugby and putting in an unbelievable tackling performance. Congratulations to Colin Gaffney and coaches for their tireless work with this group.
U13 - St. Brigids B - The U13's played away in St. Michael's College against St. Brigids B on Sunday. There were some great performances by forwards and backs on the way to victory. They play a big Quarter Final against St. Mary's away this Sunday in the Metro Cup.
U14 - BL Rugby versus Blackrock (League Final) - The U14's played their league final in Dr. Hickey Park on Sunday against Blackrock. Having topped the league and played some tight matches against Blackrock already, the final was not going to disappoint. Unfortunately BL rugby came out on the wrong side this time losing out 27-26 to a spirited Blackrock comeback. Having played so well in the first half BL rugby had a good lead at halftime but Blackrock never gave up and scored late in the second half to eventually take the league. Coaches Dave Lane, Dave Shaw, Mike Ross and Matthew Shaw have done a superb job keeping this team together and have some cup competitions to look forward to.
FIXTURES:
The Sun Chasers - Charity Cycle on 28 and 29 March
Fellow Rangers,
"Bective is a family" and "Once a Ranger, always a Ranger" aren't just plaudits, but are statement of fact.
Unfortunately, there have been a number of deaths by suicide of former Bective players over recent years. There have also been a number of high profile instances of former professional rugby players being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Last October, the wheels were set in motion for a cycle challenge combining rugby, endurance and the opportunity to raise much needed funds for two charities; Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
On 28 and 29 March a team of 15 (cyclists and support drivers) will be embarking on a charity cycle, with all funds raised going directly to these two great causes. Eight of the team are former Bective Rangers.
28 March - Bective Rangers FC to Curraghboy, Co. Roscommon (150K):
7:45 am start. The time has been chosen to represent the numbers on the jerseys previously worn by Rob Burrow, Paul Darbyshire and Doddie Wier. Three rugby players, who succumbed after a great battle with MND.
29 March - Curraghboy to Castlebar (100K): 5.45 am start. The time has been chosen so that we can be on the road for sunrise, in keeping with the Darkness into Light theme.
Connacht are hosting Munster in the URC on 29 March. The fundrasing team had already been set up before it was announced that the match was moving from Galway to Castlebar. The team had no hesitation in accepting the challenge of going the extra 40K this change of fixture would mean.

BECTIVE MEN’S SHED
The ‘Bective Men’s Shed’ is for those retired members who can give an hour or two on a Thursday to devote to maintenance and development of our premises and for a meet up for tea/coffee. We are keen to develop the rear of the pavilion so that it can be used during the summer months for outside eating/drinking and the group are currently working on this project. The Men’s Shed meets on Thursdays at 12 noon in the clubhouse.
