President’s Message 2024/25 - John Bolger

It is an honour to be the President of Bective Rangers FC for the season 2024/2025.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you to Donnybrook and whether this is your first visit, or you are a frequent visitor, I hope that it will not be your last.

Bective Rangers has a long history, most of which has been spent here in Donnybrook, and this is our 143rd season of rugby.  We are very proud of our history and although some would say that our best rugby days are behind us, our members and frequent visitors would argue that we are still making a large contribution to rugby both on and off the pitch in Leinster, Ireland and further afield.

That said, our achievements last season did not reach the heights that we had hoped and did not reach the heights of the previous season.  Although our First XV failed in their bid for three Leinster League Division 1A titles in a row (and as such did not reach the All-Ireland League Play-Offs), our Second XV won the Leinster 2nds Division 1A title for the fourth year in a row.  Our First XV made it to the Junior All Ireland Cup Final, and our Third XV also made it to their cup final.

While we may look at last season as a disappointment, we are looking forward to the 24/25 season with a renewed optimism, with a whole new coaching team in place for our First and Second XVs.  I would like to wish our new Head Coach Ben Manion the very best of luck for the forthcoming season as he aims to build upon the foundations put in place by our outgoing Head Coach Bernard Jackman.  Alongside Ben,  I would like to welcome our new Forwards Coach Peter O’Donnell.  Both Ben and Peter bring vast coaching experience across multiple levels of the game in Ireland and abroad.  I would like to extend a particular welcome back to the club to our new Backs Coach Rory O’Loughlin, who before a long professional playing career for Ireland, Leinster and Exeter Chiefs, began his rugby journey in Donnybrook playing mini rugby for Bective!

I also congratulate Tiarnan McCloskey on his election as First XV Captain for the club; a great appointment who we all know will lead the team by example on the pitch throughout the season.

Also, one final new face is Dave McAllister who will be working closely with Ben and the rest of the coaching staff in his role as U20’s Coach.

Of course, it takes many others to ensure that our various rugby teams can take to the pitch every weekend, and I would like to thank all of the coaches, managers, kit managers, physios and of course players at all levels in the club that make this a reality throughout the season.

A very important section of the club is our Mini’s and Youths section.  My former Bective team mate Richie Maybury and the rest of his team of parents (including many other former team mates) put a huge amount of work to get over 300 boys and girls from ages 5 to 18 training and playing rugby week in week out.  This achievement alone is a phenomenal tribute to the volunteerism that exists in a club such as Bective.

Off the pitch our Strategic Plan 2023-2028 was officially launched in the clubhouse during the summer of 2024.  The plan has six main components; Rugby Ambition, Clubhouse & Facilities, Branding & Communications, Community, Finance & Sponsorship and Governance.  Although this is a five-year plan, there are many tangible results of the plan to be seen already in place, on and off the pitch.  While only one component of the plan, the most obvious is the major renovations undertaken to the clubhouse over the last year or so.  This is yet another indication of the level of effort of club members providing time and expertise in a voluntary way.  The Strategic Plan has been a number of years in the making and has been overseen by three different Club Presidents and two different Club Chairpersons!  I would like to thank all involved in this huge undertaking and in particular those who continue to work with the plan to ensure its full implementation over the coming years.  The plan is available to all via our club website, and I would encourage all to take a look to see for themselves the great work that is being undertaken in the club across the six key components described above.

While a lot of effort put in by our volunteer members is very plain to see in the teams playing on the pitch and the clubhouse improvements, there is much unseen voluntary effort in rugby clubs up and down the country that is a critical component to the success of the operation.  I would like to pay tribute to all of these unseen heroes in Bective, including members of our Executive Committee, Trustees and those many untitled people working continuously in the background, ensuring that the club can always put its best foot forward in all circumstances.  It may be stating the obvious, but the club would not be able to function without all of this effort; these people are the backbone of the club and every hour that is contributed really makes a difference, so please let us know if you can contribute even a few hours a month.

I would like to thank the outgoing members of our Executive Committee for all of their effort and work over the last number of years: David O’Donnell, Mark Jones, Emmett Sheridan, Conor Heffernan and Marisa Guerrero.  While I will not go into details of what they all individually contributed, I will say that their replacements have big shoes to fill!

I welcome Snow Technology back as our main sponsor for the upcoming season.  Thank you to all our sponsors and financial contributors; your ongoing support is key to our future success and should never be underestimated as to its importance to the club.  Our ongoing match day lunches provide a key income to the club, but also allows our visitors to experience the Bective hospitality up close!  Thank you to all who contribute to their organisation and your great effort in making sure that everybody has a great time.

I hope that all of our members join us in Donnybrook for our home matches at all levels this season, and whenever possible, our away matches too; this support means a huge amount to the players and coaches and is key to maintaining a positive atmosphere in the club.  You can of course enjoy the aftermath of matches in the comfort of the Bective Bar where Mark, Sharon and the rest of their team will be happy to welcome you with a tea, coffee or something stronger!  Mark will also always be happy to talk to you regarding any social or business events that could be hosted in the Bective Clubhouse.

On those rare unfortunate occasions when you cannot attend in person, all of our home matches and many of our away matches are streamed live on Bective TV YouTube channel, complete with Chuck’s unique style of commentary and his various sidekick match analysts.

I would like to thank our Immediate Past President Michael Shalloe for all his work last year and his assistance to me in preparing for the role this year.

I would like to thank Steve McGettigan, Club Chairperson and Jimmy White, Senior Vice President and all of the Executive Committee for their ongoing assistance and guidance throughout the year.

I would like to extend a particular welcome to all of our visiting team players, coaches and management over the season and hope you enjoy our Bective hospitality and, as always, let’s hope all players walk off the pitch safely.

Finally, I ask we remember with great fondness our members and friends who passed away over the past season.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

John Bolger

Club President 2024/2025

Coach’s Message - Ben Manion

Since 1881 Bective Rangers FC has been at the heart of the club game in Ireland and is representative of so many of the best virtues of rugby, making it an honour and a privilege to be appointed Head Coach for the 2024/25 season.  I am excited to join this vibrant community and look forward to working with each of you to create an environment where everyone can thrive and hopefully achieve our shared goals.

Rory, Peter and I aim to build on the strong foundations left by Bernard Jackman and his coaching team over the last few seasons to make it over that final hurdle.  So it is with genuine optimism that we begin this new campaign.  The last few years should remind everyone though that achievement does not come without extreme hard work, sacrifice and determination from players, coaches and members alike.

Congratulations to new Club Captain Tiarnan on his appointment, his work ethic, determination and standing among his peers is clearly evident and I wish him every success as he begins his new role.  To David McAllister and his U20’s and all of the Junior and Minis players and coaches, I wish you much success and look forward to working with you all closely throughout the season.

Lastly, but by no means least, to the members, sponsors and supporters thank you for your unwavering support.  You are the life blood of the club and your deeds are much appreciated by everyone who pulls on a Bective Rangers jersey.  It is understated how much a vocal support can lift a team, so I urge you all to get down to Donnybrook and to the away games as often as possible and be a part of what promises to be a very exciting league campaign.

Yours in Rugby
Ben Manion

Captain’s Message 2024/25 - Tiarnan McCloskey

Dear Bective Rangers Members and Supporters,

I want to begin by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to my family for their unwavering support and encouragement, which has been instrumental in my journey to this position—especially my mother, whose guidance and belief in me have been a cornerstone of my success. I also want to extend a sincere thank you to all our loyal supporters who cheer us on from the sideline’s week in week out—your presence truly makes a difference. A special thanks to our sponsors, whose continued support is vital to the club’s success. And, of course, I want to acknowledge my teammates, who consistently turn up and put in the hard work on and off the field. We've had a very promising preseason, and I’m eager to carry that positive momentum into the league. It is an immense honour to be named captain, and I am deeply grateful to my teammates for placing their trust in me to lead the team in the upcoming season. I look forward to what lies ahead.

On the field, our senior team faced some challenges, finishing third in the league. Early losses, injuries, and sheer bad luck took their toll. A resurgent Monkstown clinched the title and secured promotion to the AIL. Nonetheless, there were significant successes within the club. Our seconds team triumphed in their league for the fourth consecutive year—a remarkable achievement—while our thirds team showed tremendous competitiveness, narrowly missing out on the O’Connor Cup final against St. Mary’s. A bright spot for the future was the performance of our under-17s, who won their league title. Even more encouraging is the appointment of David McAlister as our new under-20s coach for the upcoming season, supported by a dedicated team of experienced Bective members—a major development for the club, which has not fielded an under-20s team in several years. After five highly productive years, Bernard Jackman has stepped down as Head Coach. Under his leadership, the team was revitalized, overcoming challenges in Division 1A and securing league victories in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. These successes brought a winning culture back to the club, reigniting supporter interest, drawing large crowds to pre-match lunches, and boosting membership. We remain in a strong position, poised to achieve our goal of qualifying for the AIL next season. Bernard’s successor, Ben Manion, brings a wealth of experience from coaching at national levels in Australia and Japan, as well as at schools and clubs in Ireland. Joining him are Peter O’Donnell as Forwards Coach, whose extensive experience includes roles as Head Coach at Buccaneers and Ashbourne, and Rory O'Loughlin as Backs Coach. Rory, who recently concluded a stellar professional rugby career with Exeter Chiefs, where he earned 24 caps, is set to make a significant impact on our backline.

Off the field, this season also marked significant progress, particularly with the development of our clubhouse. The renovations have transformed our pavilion into a bright, modern, and functional space, now superior to most and praised by members and visitors alike. The original 1962 design has stood the test of time, and we have preserved the authentic rugby clubhouse atmosphere, complete with the much-loved open fire. We owe a debt of gratitude to architect Michael O’Carroll, Paddy O’Brien, and Jim Oliver, who led the project and ensured the highest standards of craftsmanship were met. As we look ahead, it's important to recognize the contributions of two Executive members who will be stepping down this season: Emmett Sheridan and Conor Heffernan. Conor, a member since 2014, has been instrumental in the club's operations over the past decade. Emmett, who has served as Director of Organisation for the last three years, has excelled in vital areas such as pre-match lunches, clubhouse events, sponsorship deals, and more. His passion for the club is evident, and his role will be filled by Jim Dwyer and Conor Murphy in the coming season.

A special acknowledgment is due to those who witnessed the symbolic passing of the President’s baton from Michael Shalloe to John Bolger. On behalf of all the members, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Michael for his outstanding presidency and wish John every success in his new role for the 2024/2025 season. Congratulations are also in order for Jimmy White on his election as Senior Vice President for the coming season. As we prepare for the challenges ahead, I am confident in the abilities of this talented group of players, coaches, and club members to continue building on our recent successes and restore Bective Rangers to its rightful place in the All-Ireland League.

Best wishes,
Tiarnan
