It took a late Seapoint penalty to finally subdue Bective in a terrific Leinster League Div 1 clash at a wet and damp Donnybrook on Saturday.
Seapoint started the better team and after early pressure nearly had a try, let off for Bective.
Bective lifted the pressure with good defence, however, after a move on halfway and a break by No.7 Montayne led to good play by Seapoint, punching a few holes in the Bective defence, resulting in Sisk going over in the corner for a converted try.

Bective began to settle and good play by the forwards began to pressurise Seapoint. Nonetheless, Seapoint out half Sisk was effective with the boot pinning Bective back. A great chase and catch by Nicolo Piovan from an up and under by Matthew Gilsenan, brought play into the Seapoint half. Nice work and the maul from a great Bective lineout, resulting in Scottie Baron touching down. Mikey O’Hare adding the points.

Bective, playing with more confidence now, kept up the good work rate and after Seapoint, on their own scrum were unable to clear, resulting in Sisks kick being blocked for Kieron White touching down for the try, converted by Mikey O’Hare.

It was end to end stuff with both sides trying to move the wet ball in tough conditions. Great continuity by Seapoint with No. 7 Montayne prominent again brought play into the Bective half and after a couple of mauls, hooker Anderson was in for a try in the corner. This time the conversion was missed.

Bective decided to use the bench with Colin Jackson and Jamie Lawless coming on but unfortunately, Jamie had to retire after a few carries with a shoulder injury.

Seapoint picked up where they left off taking the game to Bective, pinning Bective in their 22. After a good scrum by Seapoint brought play into the Bective 22, where Bective were penalised, Seapoint decided on a tap and go with Montayne involved again, this time putting full back Jungmann in for the try, converted by Geoff Mahon.

With Seapoint upping their game, the Bective 15 were working overtime to stem the tide and gain some momentum of their own. This started with another turn over Bective penalty from a Seapoint scrum inside the Bective 22. After play was brought to the Seapoint 22, another great Bective turnover on the Seapoint scrum allowed Bective to move the ball wide for Mark Bennett to make a great carry. Then quick ball with a long pass from Matthew Gilsenan to Connie Campher linking with his centres for Kieron White to put Benji Kealy in for the try, converted by Mikey O’Heir.

Unfortunately for Bective, Captain Mattie Keane retired with an ankle injury, replaced by Fintan O’Malley.
Seapoint immediately hit back after a lineout on the Bective 22, moved the ball wide and some good mauling and with Bective unable to hold out, Montayne touched down near the posts for the converted try.

Bective upped their game looking for that score and some momentum, but after good play, couldn’t break through the resolute Seapoint defence. It was now end to end with either side looking for the next score. A turnover to Seapoint on halfway brought the play to the Bective 22. From the lineout and maul Britchfield got the touchdown with Mahon converting. Seapoint were in front by 12 now.

After Bective won another penalty at the scrum in the Seapoint half, play was brought to the Seapoint line. A great throw by Scottie Barron and catch by the outstanding Ger Ward brought play to the Seapoint line for Tadhg O’Dwyer to touch down, with the difficult conversion missed .

With 8 mins to go, could Bective pull it out of the fire and get a draw? Nonetheless, the kick off was kind to Seapoint and Bective had to withstand further pressure. That said, Bective weathered the storm. After another great take in a lineout from Ger Ward set-up for a great finish. Bective were moving the ball well, punching holes in the Seapoint defence and after a number of high tackles, finally won a penalty under the posts. Going for the scrum which Seapoint collapsed, Bective decided to take the 3 points on offer with time still on the clock.

From the kick off Bective gained possession and another great carry from Ger Ward brought play to the halfway. Unfortunately, the ball was spilled and the chance was lost. With Seapoint now in possession, it was smart play from their pack to win the penalty and with the last kick of the game, Geoff Mahon kicked the points to close out the game.
