Marian College celebrates its 70th anniversary with a function at Bective Rangers FC clubhouse.
On Friday the 11th of October the Past Pupils Union of Marian College held a special function in the Bective clubhouse to celebrate 70 years of existence.
A most appropriate location as our beloved past pupil, Pat Flood was President of the Past Pupils Union (PPU) for many years and also a member of Bective Rangers FC. Pat was the driving force in the development of the PPU in the College and we are sure he would have been very proud of all the support that the PPU is giving back to the College and its students. Another very special link is that Pat’s brother Michael was President of Bective Rangers in the seasons 2020 to 2022.
Over 150 past pupils attended the function which enabled pupils and staff, past and present, to meet and share some great stories.
We would like to congratulate Bective Rangers on the newly refurbished clubhouse which helped provide such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
A special thanks to Mark, Sharon, and all the bar staff who kept the pints flowing and to Vinny Hanlon and his staff for all the finger food.
The link between Marian College and Bective goes back to the late 1960’s when a past pupil by the name of Louis Magee joined the club. Many past pupils followed including Louis’ sons Peter, David and Louis.
Many more were to follow; Mick O’Loughlin, Johnny Kelly, Micky Browner, Paul Browner, Joe Cully, Peter McNamara, Ross Sheridan, Daragh Sheridan, Emmett Sheridan, Shane Mallen, Dr Paul Nicholson, Prof Alfie Nicholson, Derek O’Connor, Tommy Guy, Mundy Prendiville, Greg Barry, Mark McParland, and Ben Kealy also spent time in Marian before moving on to Newbridge College and Terenure College respectively.
The Marian College PPU is indebted to Bective Rangers FC for allowing us the use of your clubhouse and facilities. We will be back…..if allowed!
Although rugby has been overtaken by soccer, hurling and Gaelic football in the college, we would very much like to strengthen the link with the club to ensure that our students, on leaving the college, will always have the option of playing rugby and so continue the special bond that began in 1968 and is still thriving with three past pupils on the current U20’s squad.
We wish the Bective teams all the success for the season ahead.
Many thanks Bective.
Marian College PPU.
