Another great day down in Donnybrook yesterday

Post match day comments by Simon Byrne “Bective’s Commentator aka Chuck”

Another great day down in Donnybrook yesterday. As always against our closest rivals Monkstown, the club was absolutely heaving. 125 sitting down to the pre match lunch, nail biting match and the clubhouse jammers again afterwards. Emmet rolled out the 2 x 60” new TV’s into the main hall for the big crowd to watch the Munster URC game which kept people in situ long after the match.

We’ve come a long way in the last 12 months - newly refurbished clubhouse is a credit to us - snag list does need to be completed though, as well as getting an interior designer luvvy in to dress the club - team photos, pennants, honours boards etc. to be re-erected.

As stated on a previous post last year, this unique sleeping giant of a club is bursting with committed members with the singular focus of getting back to senior status and the AIL. There are so many members working voluntarily in the background giving their time to help us continue the momentum we now have. And why do they do it? A love for this club, our club, and a willingness to offer their own specific skill set to help us continually evolve. And we must continue to evolve and change - we will not succeed doing the same old same old.

Emmet took a huge risk earlier this year by offering me the match day commentary gig —HUGE RISK. Don’t think I’ve slandered anyone - yet? I have no doubt that most of you at some stage have logged on to either watch live or rewatch later our league games. Rory O Connor on camera and young Louis Manahan on all the techy stuff are real unsung heroes of Bective. With a bog standard camera and a pair of laptops our members are now getting first class (away games a bit hit and miss depending on WiFi) presentation. Is there another rugby club in Ireland that can offer live streaming club matches with a score board graphic, a BRTV graphic, a sponsors graphic and team sheet graphic on screen as well as a lunatic narcissistic match commentator? There isn’t, you know. And all done by a freezing cold team of members up in the gantry - complete amateurs trying to bring layers of professionalism to their club, their family.

Shortly we commence recording interviews with club royalty - fireside chats in the Presidents bar with club grandees where we hope to draw out old stories and memorable histories so we have on record. A podcast with past Bective royalty based all over the world is also an opportunity under examination. All this layering on of new, bigger, stronger, better processes in Bective is laying the foundations for this club to grow both internally and externally to be best ready for both the immediate future but also the next generation. We have a responsibility as current members to respect the past but help build the new Bective so our kids and their kids can enjoy what their predecessors have. And we owe it to them.

Finally, the rugby. Another excellent performance by Berch, the coaching and backroom team as well as the squad on the pitch. A maximum 5 points against the runaway unbeaten league leaders? Outstanding. We’re up to 3rd now behind Monkstown and Seapoint and with momentum. Well done all.Hon Bective. Love this club.
