Leinster League 1A Champions!!!

Weekly Newsletter (24 Feb-2 Mar)

GENERAL UPDATES

Bective Rangers are the Leinster League Div 1A champions 2024/25 for the third time in four years, setting the squad up for another tilt at going back senior through the play-offs next month.  Bective’s semi-final opponents will be Connemara RFC or Creggs RFC on April 5 at a venue to be announced.

The team did more than enough on the final day in Tullow to close out the league.  Although the result was in our opponents favour, everyone that witnessed the game at Black Gates will know otherwise.  In a bizarre game marred by a record number of penalties, the players battled away against the odds in a tense physical contest only to be denied with the strangest of tries on full time.

However, later on all was forgotten with great celebrations back at the clubhouse in Donnybrook for the presentation by the President of the Leinster Branch Declan Gardiner of the ‘Eddie Egan Memorial Trophy’ and medals to Capt. Tiarnan McCloskey and the players.

Results:
U12's
 - Friday night lights versus touring team from Austria side RC Donau.  There was some amazing rugby played by both sides on Friday night with some super tries scored.  Bective came out on top in all matches but the Austrian sides certainly put it up to them.

U9's - The U9's had a great match versus Barnhall.  Coach Joe Oliver’s team were described as “like the Harlem Globetrotters” in attack.   Barnhall were shown proper Bective hospitality in the club afterwards

.U10's - The 10's played away in Stillorgan/Rathfarnham.  There was some super rugby played with both teams scoring some super tries.

U11's - The U11's were away in St. Mary's where they played against tough sides.  Bective showed great determination, teamwork and sportsmanship as they played out some brilliant matches.  They continue to represent the club superbly.

U13's - Played away in Malahide in the 1st round of the Metro Invitational Boys U13 Cup.  They had a superb win coming out 42 - 12 winners on the day.  6 tries were scored with all conversions kicked.  A big call out to Joaquin Black and Henry Pickard who kicked all 6 conversions in very windy conditions.

The Sun Chasers - Charity Cycle on 28 and 29 March

Fellow Rangers,

"Bective is a family" and "Once a Ranger, always a Ranger" aren't just plaudits, but are statement of fact.

Unfortunately, there have been a number of deaths by suicide of former Bective players over recent years. There have also been a number of high profile instances of former professional rugby players being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Last October, the wheels were set in motion for a cycle challenge combining rugby, endurance and the opportunity to raise much needed funds for two charities; Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

On 28 and 29 March a team of 15 (cyclists and support drivers) will be embarking on a charity cycle, with all funds raised going directly to these two great causes. Eight of the team are former Bective Rangers.

28 March - Bective Rangers FC to Curraghboy, Co. Roscommon (150K):

7:45 am start. The time has been chosen to represent the numbers on the jerseys previously worn by Rob Burrow, Paul Darbyshire and Doddie Wier. Three rugby players, who succumbed after a great battle with MND.

29 March - Curraghboy to Castlebar (100K): 5.45 am start. The time has been chosen so that we can be on the road for sunrise, in keeping with the Darkness into Light theme.

Connacht are hosting Munster in the URC on 29 March. The fundrasing team had already been set up before it was announced that the match was moving from Galway to Castlebar. The team had no hesitation in accepting the challenge of going the extra 40K this change of fixture would mean.
