Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker was first blooded to the game of rugby at Bective House College. In 2004 Mr. Edwin Woods, a descendant of William Woods, provided author Paul Murray information for the publication of a biographical tome of Bram Stoker called “From the Shadow of Dracula”.

The Stoker family lived for a time on Buckingham Street near Rutland Square. The descendants of Rev. Woods are aware that he was known for his interest in sport and rugby football in particular. Rev. Woods was Stoker’s tutor in the college. Like many of his fellow Bective House students he went on to Trinity College. Stoker was tall and big in stature and played in the forwards. Known for his athleticism he became heavily involved with the rugby and athletic clubs in Trinity.

  • John Edward Walsh QC

    Attorney General for Ireland, represented Trinity College as their Westminster M.P, later became a Judge and an author. He also seved as Master of the Rolls in Ireland from 1866 to 1869.

  • Rev. Richard Frederick

    A famous Church of England Rector, known for his translations, historical works and religious writings including his “Plain Reasons Against Joining the Church of Rome”. He was rector at St. Mary’s Soho in London.

  • Sir John Thomas

    Historian and archeologist who wrote many important books on the history of Dublin. He was involved in founding the Public Records Office and was secretary of the Royal Irish Academy for 34 years.

  • Sir Robert Stawell Ball

    Pioneering scientist and mathematician who became Astronomer Royal of Ireland and Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College, followed by appointment to Cambridge University. He was the founder of “The Screw Theory”. His book “The story of the Heavens” is mentioned in the Ithaca chaper of Joyce’s Ulysses.

  • Sir Charles Alexander Cameron

    The first official to be installed as Freeman of the City for decreasing the death rate of the city’s poor from one of Europe’s highest to one of the lowest recorded. He was the second President of Bective Rangers 1898 to 1908 and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Molesworth St.

  • Andrew Philip Magill

    Senior Dublin Castle civil servant, who witnessed the political chaos and leading personalities of the years between the Easter Rising and Irish Partition. In 1921 he moved to Belfast were he was involved with establishing the new Northern Ireland Government and Civil Service.
