On Saturday 20th April, our 4XV took on Terenure in the O’Connor Cup Final. After a successful league campaign ,which saw the team reach the Metro Div8 Final vs Athy RFC, the 4XV started their Cup run with solid victories against the Dublin Dogos and Old Belvedere in Rounds 1 and 2 at the end of March.
Next up was a tough semi-finals away from home against UCD. An outstanding team performance led to a Final versus Terenure, an old foe at J4/5 level over the years.
The final was played in glorious conditions in Donnybrook as part of a Cup Double header. The Winters Cup being contested at 4pm, while our game was at 2pm.
Geoff Mahon‘s boot was on fire all day as the team chose to take their shot at goal as much as possible. 2 early penalties gave us a 6-0 lead. Terenure drew level with 2 kicks of their own on the 22min mark. Just as half time was approaching, the 4XV went on the attack and after a few phases, Ben Garrett dashed for the corner after the Nure defence was sucked-in in the middle of the pitch. Geoff slotting the difficult kick with ease! After half-time, Geoff kicked another penalty making it 16-6. The 4XV were camped in the Terenure 22″ for lengthy spells but the Terenure defence stay solid. On the 55min mark, Dylan Healy finished off another well worked team try with dozens of hands involved. The conversion, from the touchline, hits the crossbar….the only kick Geoff Mahon would miss all day. The score was 21-6, the largest lead we would have all match. Terenure now knew what they had to do – attack! And so they did, being held up over the line on 58mins. The ref well placed to see it. More pressure on the Bective defence ensued and Terenure were rewarded with a try on 65mins to make the score 21-13. Only 7mins later, and after more pressure in the Bective 22″, a ruck formed 2m from the touchline. The Terenure scrum half looked like he would pass open but sniped blind and touch the ball down at the corner flag….the game was now in the balance with 8mins left to play at 21-18.
Bective got back down to the Terenure 22″ and a Bective penalty was award for a player being off his feet. Geoff again slotted it home to make it 24-18 with a minute left to play. Terenure took a quick drop out and after Bective gave away a penalty, it gave Terenure one more chance at the win. They worked their way to within 10m of our try line after a missed Bective tackle down the wing, but the ensuing couple of passes in the middle of the pitch resulted in an interception by Geoff Mahon. We retained the ball from the ruck and we put the ball out of play……CUP CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations to all coaching staff & management (Corry McCarthy & Ronan Ward), physio (Danny Thompson) and players involved throughout the League and Cup campaigns. Only 20 players could line out in the final but it was a full squad effort. Special mention to two of the older heroes of the team who picked up nasty injuries in the last few week. Tom Connolly (achilles) and Dave O’Loughlin (ankle break).
